Marine sculpture on loan to Kent Trumbull Library

Posted Oct. 9, 2011

Jim Rapone, chairman of the Trumbull County Veterans MemorBar on the Beachial Committee, has recently loaned the bronze sculpture, Bar on the Beach, to the Kent State University at Trumbull library. The statue, which is on loan to the library until December 1, is a replica of a U.S. Marine depicted in the painting of the same name.

The original painting the sculpture was based on features a scene from the battle of Iwo Jima during World War II and was painted by retired Marine Colonel Charles Waterhouse.
"Bar" is an acronym for the "Browning Automatic Rifle" which is the firearm the Marine is depicted using in both works.

The Trumbull County Veterans Memorial committee commissioned New York sculptor, Robert Eccleston to create this statue in honor of all World War II veterans. A life size bronze statue is currently the centerpiece of a newly dedicated Veterans Memorial in downtown Warren. A sister statue is currently on loan to the Butler Art Gallery in Howland.
