Kent State School of Art's Downtown Gallery Presents "Capture: Photographs by Drew Smith"Posted May. 9, 2013
The Kent State University School of Art’s Downtown Gallery will present “Capture: Photographs by Drew Smith” from May 22 through June 15. The Downtown Gallery is located at 141 E. Main Street in Kent, Ohio. The gallery will host an opening reception on Thursday, May 23, from 5-7 p.m. The opening reception is free and open to the public.
Drew Smith produces an impressive body of images in his current exhibition at the Downtown Gallery. From capturing stillness and tranquility within landscapes to documenting dynamic urban cityscapes, his photographs capture an array of subjects and themes. Architecture becomes abstracted, and candid portraits suggest stories of his travels. Inspired by formal elements within the environment and his surroundings, Smith creates compelling, elegant and breathtaking compositions. It is these formal properties that build his imagery.
Along with the technical variations and nuances available through photography, Smith depends on his intuition while shooting. He trusts his eye through the lens. Trained in film and wet chemistry photography, Smith has discovered a new range of possibilities through digital equipment. With more freedom and control over processing, Smith utilizes the subtleties in formal elements and enhances the contrast, tones and color to best represent the original experience.
Raised in an artistic family in Akron, Ohio, he developed a passion for photography early in life. Having worked for a local studio as well as professional photography labs, Smith currently works as a portrait and event photographer and resides in Akron.
