School of Art Gallery Presents Work by MFA Students

Posted Jan. 25, 2013

The Vicious Dog, Kathryn Shinko, textilesKent State University's School of Art Gallery will present the KSU MFA Show Jan. 15 through Feb. 15, 2013, featuring work by all students currently enrolled full time in the master of fine arts program in the School of Art. The exhibition was curated by Director of Galleries Anderson Turner and graduate assistants Brenton Pahl and Kathryn Shinko. The School of Art Gallery is located in the Art Building at 400 Janik Drive on the Kent Campus.

The exhibition will include the work of more than 30 students in a variety of media, including textiles, prints, sculptures, ceramics and assemblages. The curators worked with the students to select the best pieces to showcase the variety of talents represented in the MFA program.

Many non-traditional pieces will be represented in the exhibition, inlcluding a monofilament weaving by Lauren Mangeri and a painting on glass by Scott Goss.

In addition to assisting with exhibition preparations, first-year textiles graduate student and exhibit co-curator Kathryn Shinko will also show one of her pieces in the KSU MFA Show. Her piece (pictured above), titled "The Vicious Dog," is a cross-stitched textile work, which Shinko describes as a representation of the horrors that can lurk under the pleasant facade of the middle American home.

"The lurid yellows and pinks, along with an odd pixelated look, add to the surrealism of the image. Cross stitching is an art primarily associated with domesticity, and dogs are domesticated pets," Shinko said. "But in some homes, the 'wild animal' inside the dog comes out and leaves the household hostage to terror."

Gallery hours are Tues. through Fri., 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 330-672-7853 or visit galleries.kent.edu.
