Pair of Kent Trumbull professors receive honorsPosted Mar. 13, 2013
On Tuesday, March 12, 2013, a pair of Kent State University at Trumbull professors in the form of M. Kathleen Dwinnells (assistant professor, Nursing) and Irene Gianakos (associate professor, Psychology), were honored by the Women’s Center at Kent State University at its fourth annual “Mothers, Mentors and Muses” Scholarship Fundraiser reception at the Kent Student Center Ballroom.
The event honored 54 Kent State women who were nominated in any of three roles: a mother – someone who has helped “birth” new ideas and thoughts in others and has also served as an overall nurturing individual, a mentor – an individual who has been both a role model and a trusted counselor to others, or a muse – an individual who has inspired both creativity and academic enthusiasm in others.
Dwinnells was nominated for the mother role by colleague Alice Colwell, who wrote of Dwinnells:
“Kathy embraces every nursing student as if they were her own; even through her busy schedule she attends to the needs of each student. I have seen her laugh with students, console them, celebrate with them and embrace them in a way that say, ‘I care.’ ”
Gianakos was nominated in the mentor role by colleague Gary Ciuba, who said of Gianakos:
“‘Dr. Gianakos has changed my life.’ I have heard again and again from students. Whether they’ve taken a class with her or sought her out because of her reputation for being a compassionate listener and sage counselor, they have left her with fresh insights into their lives. She embodies all three of the “M’s” with such consummate skill that it is difficult to single her out for recognition as just one.”
The Women’s Center, which was established in 1996, is focused on advancing women in their academic careers. Funds raised at the event will fund $500 scholarship awards for two Kent State University female students. This scholarship has benefitted 16 students since its introduction in 2003.
